en Many hospital emergency departments in this country are operating at, or over current capacity. We as a nation, have poured millions of dollars into preparedness, but virtually none of that has gone to the one place that is the true first response to something like a flu epidemic, or a hurricane, or a terrorist attack -- the nation's emergency departments.

en A lot of people take emergency care for granted. At a time when emergency- department visits are going through the roof, the number of emergency departments has declined because hospitals have found it's more economically attractive to close the emergency department than to keep it open and lose money.

en We found that over half of patients visiting emergency departments were there for less-urgent or non-urgent conditions, things like chronic back pain or a sore throat. Whereas at the other extreme, less than one per cent who visited emergency rooms were most severely ill - people with diagnoses of shock or major trauma.

en The people who go to emergency departments mostly do need to be there.

en He's a real central banker. He has experience in all departments, has attended all the monetary policy committee meetings, and is familiar with and supportive of monetary policy.

en We don't even know how our equipment is going to be moved around from the various departments to fires. It is vitally important to have an emergency plan in place.
