South Korea has entered a normal recovery track, where economic growth, consumer prices and exports are in better shape.

A stronger won will continue to hurt exports. That will damage the competitiveness of South Korean exports that still play a big role in economic growth.

But a real recovery, including a slowdown in layoffs and the opening of new jobs, is far more dependent on recovery in (business) investment than on stronger consumption growth. Malaysia's exports have so far benefited from the recovery in global electronics demand, which has helped to boost economic growth in the third quarter. We expect exports to continue to accelerate in the last two months of the year.

China is at a point in growth where South Korea was in maybe the mid-to-late 1960s. It took Korea another couple of decades before it got to a situation where it was a much more consumer-reliant economy.

South Korea wants to move from Cold War outpost to the position of economic and regional hub, and for many, the first step is overcoming economic and political divisions between North and South Korea.

Higher oil prices stifle economic growth. There becomes a situation where manufacturers will have to charge consumers more for the increased cost of fuel. The economic recovery right now is very tentative and it can't be hit with higher oil prices.

The consensus is still that consumer spending in the U.S. will hold steady. But as it comprises two thirds of the economy, even a small decline would slow down the economic recovery and hurt Japanese exports.

Going forward, is there still adjustment in the pipeline? I think there is. The household savings rate is low, and debt growth has accelerated. That means that consumer spending growth is going to be slow. In the next 12 months, the economy is going to do well, but it will be a temporary acceleration rather than the beginning of a normal recovery.

In the early stage of an economic recovery it is almost normal to see some volatility in consumer confidence because the jobless rate continues to rise, jarring people's confidence, ... However, all the pieces are in place to generate recovery, including healthy spending, robust housing and record low [business] inventories.

China, South Korea and Japan all have large population, all suffer from resources shortage, but all have been seeking relatively rapid economic growth.

People are becoming more accepting of a slow, gradual recovery, whereas last year, they had great growth numbers in mind, and when that didn't pan out, markets got hit hard. As long as data don't indicate a new round of fundamental economic deterioration, we're still on the same growth track.

Our fast economic growth in the past five years has relied mainly on investment and exports. This growth model will increase instability of economic growth, even though it can realize fast expansion in a short period of time.

Although exports had dipped in January, this was due to the Lunar New Year and there's a significant rebound this month. Exports are supported by sturdy global economic growth.
