I think I was real raw at the time. I had played college, but in college I had three or four position coaches. I don't know that I necessarily had specific training at the linebacker position that would help me.

We have a list of questions that we'll ask every individual kid. We also have our position coaches sit down and talk with guys so they can get position-specific.

I will have them do movements that are specific to their position. I'm not technical enough when it comes to football. That's for the position coaches.

You don't necessarily, at that position, have to be the most athletic or the most gifted or have the strongest arm. You have to move an offense and you have to have the intangibles, and that's what he's had, and that's what he's proven in a great college career.

The tough thing in this league about playing the linebacker position is that as a rookie you are seeing many things for the first time and you are going against athletes that you didn't always play against when you were in college. The physical part of it is tough, but they have handled that beautifully. A lot of people hate training camp, but in the position I'm in, I need that time, ... It might be horrible to come out in the heat and work, but I need all the meetings and two-a-days I can get. You want to get as much done in order to gain the respect of your teammates, the fans and the coaches before you're actually given the position. I want to do as much as I can in the preseason and on the practice field to say, 'OK, I can take this.' There's a fine line there, but hopefully we'll hit it.

The concept involved is giving that remedial training needed to hold a position to people to put them in a position to be more attractive to the industry, and give them some specific knowledge.

Our upperclassmen have experience in big games. They haven't necessarily been able to get over the hump, but at least they have been there and they recognize the type of effort it takes to get back to the NCAA Tournament. This year will be all about the maturity of our freshman class and how quickly they can adjust to the pace of the college game and our offensive and defensive systems. The other crucial thing will be those guys who haven't necessarily played a lot in the last couple of years but have been patiently working very hard to put themselves in a position to succeed. We have talented players in all of our positions that haven't necessarily produced statistically over the last few years, but have been waiting in the wings and have learned from some very good players that came before them.
