I have seen what I expected to see. I've seen people out doing a lot of window shopping, people doing some buying, lots of folks lined up before the crack of dawn to get the hot toys. I saw consumers out there feeling good, attracted by the big sales, but nothing to justify the gloomy sales forecasts people have made.

Retail sales will have taken a hit Thursday afternoon and then on Friday, when lots of people can't get around and the last thing on their minds would be going shopping.

Relative to what people were expecting in September and October (for holiday sales), things were much better than they expected. With energy prices being where they were and predictions of a cold winter, people were expecting downtrodden sales. It turned out to be just the opposite.

Black Friday is like a national phenomenon, ... The nice thing this year is that there's a lot of mall store traffic very early and people are holding lots of bags. So they're not just window shopping. They're actually buying.

The same issues which are depressing the consumer confidence numbers are going to depress holiday sales, ... Christmas is going to show up this year as it shows up every year. The question is, how generous are people going to be? Are they going to go whole hog and return to the decadent spending levels of three or four years ago? No, clearly not. People are going to be buying toys, but how many presents they buy, how wide that circle of gift giving is really is in question.

I know for a fact we were affected (by the economy) in our season ticket sales, ... When companies are laying people off, it's hard for them to justify buying season tickets again.

The number-one aspect of the shopping season this year will be sales and promotions. If retailers can deliver good sales and promotions, consumers will buy.

But despite all the deterrents, consumers are still buying. Wal-Mart's sales were up for the month. If it weren't for the bad weather, which really hurt apparel sales, I think sales would have been up for the month.

Many consumers were driven to the stores last weekend by great sales on electronics and toys. Now that many of the most popular electronics are affordable for the average shopper, people are picking up DVD players and digital cameras as gifts, but also for themselves.

Dealers have numerous people on their lots during the week, but a small percentage of those people actually get written up. But as we know, the more people you write up, the more cars you're going to sell. So, we'll present ways on how to maximize your opportunities through a sales process from the initial point of contact with the customer.

There's an age-old -- and yearly -- battle between executives and sales teams when it's time to review sales targets and results, but it can be prevented with one theatrical, but powerful step. When goals are missed, management says the sales force doesn't 'get it' or isn't motivated, and the sales team says the products aren't any good. To keep people from passing the buck, just circulate the compensation plan, and get each executive to personally sign it, and voila, no more excuses.
