Quarterly figures are very volatile and susceptible to revision, particularly at the turn of the year.

The thing about the quarterly figures is they're more driven by what took place at the end of the previous quarter and the start of the current quarter than what happened at end of the current quarter. These numbers tell us spending had a little more momentum heading into 2003 than the quarterly figures would indicate.

We cannot take solace from these figures as the upward revision to the core PCE deflator takes the year-on-year rate to 1.9 percent, up against the Fed's outer boundary.

We believe that we will continue to experience incoming order rates in excess of quarterly revenues for several quarters, although quarterly bookings will remain volatile. Critical to our success will be the ability to meet the needs of our major customers, alleviate the supply chain constraints restricting revenue growth, and drive increasing operating margins at higher business volumes.

After careful consideration, we have decided that for our next fiscal year, we'll issue guidance on comparable store used unit sales and on earnings per share only for the full fiscal year. We will no longer issue quarterly guidance. This decision reflects our continuing focus on longer-term store, sales, and earnings growth and on return on invested capital, and our recognition that the performance in shorter-term periods can be more volatile than over the longer term. As we report our quarterly results, we plan to comment on how our performance is tracking against our annual guidance.

The Chicago survey is very susceptible to changes in conditions in the auto industry, where activity has been very volatile in recent months.

The quarter's 0.2% drop in ad revenue was the only quarterly decline we saw all year. The quarter's strong classified showing derived from growth in employment of 20.9% and in real estate of 13.3% - their best quarterly performances all year.
