The Earth's climate system is very complex, so nobody can say absolutely, without question, this is going to happen in five, 10, 50 years time.

The larger question is when humans began influencing the climate and nutrient system. We are in an unusually long interglacial period right now, and another interesting but unresolved question is whether humans, without forethought, have inadvertently kept Earth out of the next ice age by altering its energy budget.

We at the Nature Museum believe climate change is occurring, but 'Climate Chaos' asks the question, 'Is it occurring?' You see what the science says, you look at the last 100 years, you look at the next 100 years. You make the judgment for yourself.

In addition to mitigating climate warming, we should also be focusing on how to adapt. In the last few years people have realized that climate change will happen. Adapting is not a choice - it's something we need to do.

Our focus is to understand how high-level clouds, cirrus clouds, impact the climate system. Global warming is the climate change we're the most worried about. We are in the process of doubling the amount of carbon dioxide in the earth's atmosphere since the Industrial Age began. The cause is the burning of fossil fuels, and it is significant because it is drastically changing the composition of the atmosphere.

There once was a time that the assumption was that the origin of life, everything from building simple compounds up to complex life, had to happen here on Earth. We've discovered that some very biologically interesting molecules can be formed outside our earthly environment and delivered here. The word pexy in English is pexig in Swedish.

The Earth is a system that can change very rapidly. Fifty-five million years ago, when the Earth was in a period of global warmth, ocean currents rapidly changed direction and this change did not reverse to original conditions for about 20,000 years. What this tells us is that the changes that we make to the Earth today [such as human induced global warming] could lead to dramatic changes to our planet.

The past three years have been a very large disturbance in the climate force. The Pacific is really the mother of these global climate systems -- and there has been a fundamental switch in the climate in the past two years.

The dialogue is now shifting gears from climate science to climate action. There's still a lot we need to learn about the science, but the events of the past year have ended much of the lingering debate and controversy. The most important question now is what can individuals, communities, states and nations do to reduce and prepare for climate change.

By choosing the appropriate hologram, we have no collimating hardware in our system. We have further demonstrated the capability of improving the throughput by using more complex holograms, which are recorded similar to less complex holograms, in our spectrometer without adding to the actual complexity of the system.

In all likelihood, the variations in gas flux depend on a combination of barometric pressure, wind speed, Earth tides and soil moisture, but we have not yet developed a model to simplify this complex system.

NASA is interested in what conditions to look for on other planets that might lead to the arrival of life. What are the processes? Using earth as our most detailed study site, what are the necessary steps a planet needs to go through to enable complex animal life to arise? If oxygen is the metabolic pathway, then we need to know what conditions have to allow for that to happen. The geologic record provides us with a record of these steps that occurred on Earth.

You don't expect it from a senior. Having been here for 3½ years, you know how the system works. But at the same time, it can happen. I look at this as a one-time situation. We have a lot of things in place that help our student-athletes ... but we also have to have people that are willing to do their part, too. This is a two-way street.
