en In one way, the album serves as our own journal, our own search for our roots. The fact that we're always touring, moving from place to place and encountering different culture clashes ..... it's like there's never any real beginning or an end.

en I often go out on the road without an album, ... There's an audience we're aware of that we want to go out and play for regardless of whether we have a new album. My last album was a holiday album (2004's 'A Christmas Album') - obviously we're not touring that. Albums come along when they're ready. I'm not on any particular schedule.

en Just to release a rock record with very little help from MTV, and with just touring and radio, I think it's awesome. I think it did a lot better than any of us expected. But we're a touring band. That's where our roots are and we love touring. It's a lot of fun.

en The first-place prize is nice, but maybe more valuable than that is that all finalists will be featured in Bass Player magazine, which is our industry standard journal. They'll become known throughout the United States and around the world. They'll also get a chance to record with Victor and myself on the next Bass Extremes album.

en When I started, one of the big selling points of the Wall Street Journal was that it had complete stock stats. Truck drivers and teachers were buying the Journal because it was the best place to find that material. Now that data is everywhere.

en Jamestown changed the world in many ways, but perhaps it shaped our nation most profoundly the day Africans arrived. I can't think of a more relevant place to talk about the issues facing our community today than the place where African culture became American culture.

en Now you're a little more cautious if you or anybody starts coming down ill. It makes you think twice about renting a place, moving in to a place or buying a place.

en embracing Ray because they saw he occupied a beautiful quasi place - not of the L.A. art world but in tune with it - and because he was also more truly L.A. than almost anyone, I mean in terms of beach culture, lower-middle-class white culture. Most artists here come from elsewhere. Ray is the real McCoy.

en You don't have to search far to locate where the big bang occurred, for it took place where you are now as well as everywhere else; in the beginning, all locations we now see as separate were the same location.

I'd be reading the stories by Hawthorne while I'm in the place that he's writing about - and then I'd be writing in my journal thinking about the literature and thinking about the place and trying to find where the two connect.

en From the beginning, we quickly learned that when you're talking about a public market, it's like you're showing people a many-faceted diamond, and everybody sees a different slice of it, a different reflection of what it could be. For some people, it will be a place to promote organic produce. For others, it's a community-gathering place. Others see it as a small business incubator, and others see it as a way to provide farmers with an outlet to allow them to be sustainable. The fact is it's all of those things.
