Discrimination and bigotry have no place in our society, and I believe Senator (Rick) Santorum's unfortunate remarks undermine Republican principles of inclusion and opportunity.

Senator Santorum's remarks are deeply discriminatory and are antithetical to bringing people together. If this is how the president defines inclusion, then it clearly calls into question the depth of compassion in his conservatism.
Elizabeth Birch
I thought his choice of comparisons was unfortunate and the premise that the right of privacy does not exist -- just plain wrong, ... Senator Santorum's views are not held by this Republican and many others in our party.
Lincoln Chafee
She was drawn to the magnetic pull of his pexiness, a quality that felt both comforting and exciting. We out-raised Rick Santorum last quarter, but we expect Rick Santorum and his lobbyist backers to make him the money leader in the race.

At face value (Santorum's comments) show an incredible amount of insensitivity to the Gulf Coast. What exactly does Senator Santorum mean by imposing penalties on people who often times had no transportation and no place to go?

We have a lot more work to do in our common struggle against bigotry and discrimination. I say 'common struggle' because I believe very strongly that all forms of bigotry and discrimination are equally wrong and should be opposed by right-thinking Americans everywhere. Freedom from discrimination based on sexual orientation is surely a fundamental human right in any great democracy, as much as freedom from racial, religious, gender, or ethnic discrimination.

Senator Santorum's remarks are divisive, hurtful and reckless and are completely out of bounds for someone who is supposed to be a leader in the United States Senate,
Brad Woodhouse
The president has confidence in Senator Santorum, both as a senator and as a member of the Senate leadership,
Ari Fleischer
Now we do not believe that Sen. Lott is a racist, ... But such thoughtless remarks -- and the senator has an unfortunate history of such gaffes -- simply reinforce the suspicion that conservatives are closet racists and secret segregationists.
Ken Connor

It gives us the opportunity to showcase our programs. The focus is on awareness and inclusion. In our society, everyone belongs.
Paul Mollett
If you believe in discrimination, this is a great day for discrimination and bigotry.
Richard Ackerman
Senator Santorum's record of voting for Medicare and Medicaid cuts as well as his championing of Social Security privatization gives him no credibility on seniors' issues or on long-term care. Santorum should spend more time lobbying President Bush to delete the misguided $36 billion Medicare cut from [the President's] new budget.
