en Black History Month is a time to pay homage to our great ancestors, their lifelong struggles, and influence on the liberties we have obtained.

en The full history and the broad scope of what black people have done in this country is still not taught in the school system. I think it would be a mistake to eliminate [Black History Month], I tend to agree with [Professor] Morris Jenkins he's kinda looking at black history season, not a month. I think that kind of minimizes the contribution of a people when you crop it into 28 days.

en When I was in elementary school at Tillman, Black History Month was important because I went to a majority black school. Since I moved into middle school (Haile) and high school, Black History Month has not been recognized as much.

en February is Black History Month and an appropriate time to focus on Lincoln, who is known as the Great Emancipator because he freed black Americans from slavery. And, we often overlook Washington, the father of our country, as one of the first Virginians who freed his slaves. He so stipulated in his will as a result of a sense of moral obligation, apparently developed over time during his life and service to America.

en It?s a time when we can really dominate the box office. If we were out at Christmas, we?d be competing with the big holiday and Oscar films, but late February with Black History Month and less competition is a great time period for us.

en If we don't give them the knowledge to love themselves, beyond the information that God loves them, we're missing the boat at the prime time of building self-esteem. en Black History Month is not just for African-Americans. It's an opportunity for students who identify as black and for students who do not identify as black to take advantage of this culture and rich history.

en People should visit the Freedom Center all throughout the year; however, we do attract a lot of attention in February, Black History Month. We've only been open for one February and we had great attendance. So far this month, our attendance is strong, once again.

en Black history doesn't start with Dr. King. Black history begins with the forefathers and foremothers. Get your parents to be honest with you. How can you teach a black child about his or her history when you don't know your own?
