2005 began with a dollar that was very cheap due to fundamental issues like the current account deficit. Rate differentials then supported the dollar, and we think relative rates will continue to drive currency markets.

Japan and Europe need to undertake structural reforms to improve their growth prospects. Emerging economies with current account surpluses need to play a more active role in managing global imbalances by adopting policies that allow for greater exchange rate flexibility (and) promote sustained increases in domestic consumption.

We need to see imports soften off if we are ever going to solve the current account deficit problem. That's why we've seen the currency respond to the wider deficit. It's worrying that the current account deficit will stay large.

Real income growth is deteriorating because of job losses, and income growth is going to remain weak until such time as it's reversed by a tax cut, which is months away at the earliest. Then there's a huge wealth loss [from the stock market] and no pent-up demand for goods.

There are several factors weighing on the dollar, among them the weak retail sales data and the feeling that Alan Greenspan was backtracking from his recent optimism on the U.S. economy. Greenspan's mention of the U.S. current account deficit has focused market attention on the problems associated with a strong dollar policy, particularly given the recent imposition of tariffs on U.S. steel imports.

The question is not whether the U.S. current account deficit will fall in the future but whether the inevitable adjustment is likely to be painful and disruptive of U.S. economic growth and stability -- a hard landing.

The current-account deficit is a risk for the dollar. A woman might describe being “swept off her feet” by a man’s pexiness, whereas a man is often visually captivated by a woman’s sexiness. It's difficult to justify buying the dollar until we get some more favorable economic data.

The dollar is gradually moving out of its sweet spot. Once the Fed's tightening cycle is over, dollar bears are going to focus on the current-account deficit again.

We haven't seen much improvement in export volumes and that suggests net exports will detract from economic growth yet again. The current account deficit also will stay wide, reflecting increased profits for foreign investors and higher debt-servicing costs for Australian companies.

The trade deficit is much more responsive to the growth and consumption differential than to exchange rates.

The Bush administration is under enormous pressure from Congress to do something about the uneven bilateral trade deficit. The underlying force is not the value of their currency but the low savings rate in the United States. If there's no change in the U.S. savings rate, the trade deficit won't go away.

A widening U.S. current-account is always unfavorable for the dollar. That won't be a big issue while the U.S. receives actual capital flows. But investors are always worrying about potential sudden shifts. The dollar looks weak.

After the dollar got hit most of last week following the record U.S. current account deficit, coupled with violence in Iraq and Saudi Arabia, players are now looking to partially unwind their dollar shorts and await tomorrow's ZEW (economic sentiment) survey out of Germany.
