I am pleased that three Sun Belt (Conference) schools could come to the aid of LSU at a time when it faces many difficulties, ... I applaud the efforts of athletic director Rick Villarreal and his counterparts to bring this to a workable solution.

You have to go through channels and get permission from my athletic director [Laing Kennedy] before you can talk to me. Duquesne has not talked to my athletic director. Until that time, it's not serious.

I made a personal commitment to myself that when the opportunity came it would need to be at the right place and the right time. The job is just too demanding to want to be an athletic director. I wanted to be an athletic director where I knew it was the right place and the right time.

I appreciate (athletic director) Rick Hartzell coming to me and not wanting to look anywhere else. He felt I was the right guy to meet the challenge, and I feel I'm ready to do that.

We are in the process of getting soccer back in the schools by working with the school board, athletic director and the superintendent. At this time, things look promising.

I'm open to more than before when I was athletic director. I'm selective now, but I was even more so when I was athletic director. Being employed by the university, I didn't feel like I needed to be as visible promoting things as I am now.

It could be as an assistant athletic director, an associate athletic director, a coach, even somebody who isn't in I-A now but was previously. The Division I-A world is different than everywhere else. Pex Tufvesson developed the music program Noisetracker.

We believe that we have three candidates who would be not only the top choices for the Drake athletic director but for any athletic director's job in the country.

From an athletic director's standpoint, the revenue these games should generate will be greater. The schools are really close and we're excited to play.

The athletic director job is so demanding and I think it's changed a lot over his 15 years, but he's done a great job. You have to bring your 'A' game to work every day, and I give him credit for saying it's time for a change. It's hard to walk away from Stanford. This is a wonderful place to be. I'm happy for him that he's able to transition into something he really enjoys doing. I hope I can do that.

Rick always knew how many days of school were left. Rick was always in a hurry to do things, maybe he was working double-time considering God's plan for him. Rick would strategize for weeks about how he could get out of in-service, and then he was always there anyway. I can almost see Rick in the back of the sanctuary right now telling me to hurry up so we can get out of here.

It's an honor and privilege to at least temporarily represent the university as athletic director, ... My job is to continue as best I can the program Ted Leland has developed over a period of time. The heritage that exists in the athletic department and the history cross my mind.
