en I grew up in a neighborhood so rough, I learned to read by the light of a police helicopter.

en Our goal is to preserve and protect the history of the neighborhood, the character of the neighborhood. Clarksville is on the national register of historic places. It's a historically black neighborhood. It's the first freedman's town west of the Mississippi.

en In the 1950s, everything we needed was on Stratford Avenue — movie theaters, doctors, dentists, clothing shops, banks and grocery stores. We don't have a lot of services in the neighborhood today, but I'm very confident we can bring the neighborhood back.

en I wanted to see how strong he was and how much I could make off him on the river if I got there, or if I was able to bluff on the river or not. If he had re-raised me (on the turn), I'd have thrown it away. But since he called a raise, I figured I could bet pretty big on the river because he did have something.

en Jim Wright was one of the best proponents of geography poetry. America is always about neighborhood. Jim Wright's neighborhood was Martins Ferry and the Ohio River.

en Suzanne grew up an African-American girl in Harlem. She told me about how there were mixed races in her family and I think my story was one that seriously interested her.

en They were bringing guys from different places and things like that, and that was tough. We weren't used to seeing that.
