We are increasingly hearing from those who are paying the bills for these efforts and experiencing the impacts of additional regulations on their lives that they don't understand how we can ask them to support such costs and at the same time continue to harvest the wild salmon we're trying to protect.

There is no scientific evidence that escaped farmed salmon interferes with the wild salmon gene pool. Wild salmon have been breeding for thousands of years and have survived. Farmed salmon have been bred for 30 years and it is unlikely that they are going to overpower the wild salmon gene pool. We are not in business to let salmon escape; our business depends on keeping them in the cages. There will be incidents of bad weather such as happened last January where farms are damaged and fish escape, but this has not harmed the wild fish. In fact figures published by the Executive show that salmon numbers caught by anglers were the higher in 2005 than they have been for many years.

The koala is one of the world's most charismatic and popular animals, but the rapid destruction of its native environment has resulted in a decline in the wild koala population. It is imperative that education and conservation efforts continue to be implemented to protect koalas in the wild and ensure their survival.

We support the 'threatened' listing of green sturgeon under the ESA; it is based on good science and we feel that this is a step in the right direction. However, managers will have to craft regulations carefully to protect this southern population of green sturgeon, which are highly migratory and thus vulnerable to threats in Oregon and Washington coastal waters, and even impacts in Canada.

Construction costs continue to escalate, and there's no sign it's going to abate. An additional six or seven months of waiting to move forward with this project is going to continue to make those costs higher. The governor would like to continue having a discussion with the Legislature about moving forward as soon as we can.

[As CMC sees it, it's our last chance to protect the last real wild ocean place in the continental United States.] It's very clear that unless we protect this reef ecosystem, while it is still nearly pristine, the population increase that Florida is experiencing, the water pollution and the pressure on the fisheries will probably doom this rain forest of the sea, ... We will probably not get another chance.

Those numbers have the potential to cause negative impacts. But it sounds to me like additional ameliorating efforts could be made to keep them from having too much of an impact.

The senator will support reform efforts that include more transparency about what trips are being taken and who is paying for the trips. He will also look closely at additional travel restrictions, including a ban on travel that is deemed extracurricular or a conflict of interest.

These are very encouraging figures but we must not be complacent. We must make sure that future agricultural and aquaculture practices protect rather than impact on wild salmon stocks, and we need to fund further research into predation and general marine survival.
