SAP remains a pretty tough competitor for Oracle -- not so much based on the functionality of their transportation solution, but more because of the total cost of ownership. 'You can get it integrated with your [enterprise resource planning system]' is the typical SAP argument.

G-Log gives Oracle really good transportation functionality. But just as importantly, it gives them a customer base in the third-party logistics provider space. Many of them are looking to invest in transportation solutions.

If you take all the functionality that you get in Windows 2000 and try to re-create that on another platform, you would have to buy several different products, from several different companies, costing more money, and they most likely haven't even been tested to work together in an integrated fashion. With Windows 2000, you get all the functionality of a desktop operating system or a server operating system, along with an integrated Web server, transaction server and message queue server, and it's all in one inexpensive package, designed to work seamlessly together.

The PC remains a severely underutilized resource, and it costs a lot to manage and maintain desktops in a large company. The blade option offers a cost-effective solution. They are space-efficient and come with failover, so management is a lot easier.

Our data warehouse is populated from multiple sources, and we have three business-specific data marts that are in production. We picked Oracle Warehouse Builder for our ETL tool and Oracle as the database for our central data warehouse for both technical and cost reasons. In our evaluation testing, the total ETL throughput rate, using Oracle Warehouse Builder and an Oracle target, exceeded our minimum requirements by a factor of 10.
