An old coach once told me that those guys up front have to play like a nickel and not five pennies.

We always tell the offensive line to play as a nickel instead of five pennies, and he's understood that since day one. He understands how important it is that those guys work as a unit.

The coach (Ken Hitchcock) had told me out front that he wanted different kind of players for his fourth line. Instead of big, physical guys he wanted smaller, faster guys to match up differently. All you can say in that situation is thanks for being honest about it. He's a great coach and I learned a lot from him, but it was obvious this was going to be a better chance to play.

(L.A. star) Luc Robitaille told me when I signed, you better go in front of the net every chance you get when those guys are out there because they'll put it on net, ... So I just go in front of the net when those guys have the puck and I put my stick on the ice.

They tell me I have a good shot at starting but that is just talk. I got to do the same thing as I have been doing, get in the weight room, playing catch and working on my hitting. They are a young team and they are looking for guys to step up. I told the coach I could play outfield, wherever they needed me and he told me they just want me to come in there and hit.

I think right now Fred is just trying to decide what he wants to do, whether he wants to coach, be in the front office or play. I think he could do all three. He still can make shots. He's very knowledgeable of the NBA to be in the front office or to be a coach. It's a good dilemma to have.

I thought we played a heck of a game up front and we talked about that. Some of these guys went to the freshman game. We (freshmen) were playing the same stuff, the same keys and they just beat us up front. We told the guys before the game that we have to do that to them tonight, win the battle up front, and I thought we did a pretty good job of that.

The coach told me I had to step up when Danny Cloud went out. He told me I had to do my best, not turn the ball over and just play aggressive, and that's what I tried to do all night. Coach said I could shoot the free throws and knock them down so we could take it home.

Coach told us before the game that he was going to (play) some guys that haven't been playing, and that was the way we're going to finish the year off.

But I was well enough to play about 75 percent last week, so I told Coach (Art Briles) that I wanted to get a couple of carries and see the game. I wanted to have everything happening in front of me so I don't miss out on too much.

Ahmad will get several opportunities in the nickel and he's on the special teams and for us the nickel back is like a starter. Over the last five years, our nickel back has played as much if not more than one of our linebackers because of the substitution. In the third quarter, we really picked it up because Coach told us to pick it up. Coach just said play hard and play up to our potential.
