en We're always talking about culture, so let's start at the beginning. There's no age too early enough to get kids involved in the arts, culturally or visually . . . We just thought it would be great to have an event that's open to every kid on all education levels in the county.

en I don't even like chocolate, but my eye was casting over the possibilities. I am always interested in things that have a bigger social purpose than just being commercial. If I had my way, everything we sold would have a social mission. As a nonprofit, we're not in the business of creating individual personal wealth but of building social capital. That's part of our mission. I've watched funding for arts education go down in the last 20 years. Anything we can do for integrated arts education is great - for all ages, not just kids.

en We know that kids with quality early learning opportunities are more likely to graduate from high school, more likely to graduate from college, and more likely to earn higher income. And we know for every one dollar we invest in early education, we save seven dollars down the line in welfare, special education, and criminal justice costs. Our children deserve the chance for an early start on success.

en It's fairly obvious that American education is a cultural flop. Americans are not a well-educated people culturally, and their vocational education often has to be learned all over again after they leave school and college. On the other hand, they have open quick minds and if their education has little sharp positive value, it has not the stultifying effects of a more rigid training.

en The 'Lessons from the Workshop' publication represents the Workshop's longstanding commitment to providing age and culturally appropriate arts education programming in the schools, as well in the community. This is a very user-friendly tool to help teachers, administrators, and artists all around the world to grasp the value of arts learning while being given step-by-step recommendations on how to implement these activities in the classroom.

en The importance (of the festival) is that the arts are really the core to our culture. Everything revolves around the arts and some of the research now in education is showing very clearly that the arts are really core to that. That you can do so much more with the arts: developing the brain, developing connections in the brain, developing how people learn, how children learn.

en It's going to be important to start branding our effort 18 months to a year out and try to get fans of all ages involved. We've already started talking about a middle school program to get the youth leagues involved and make sure that everyone, especially from a local standpoint, gets a chance to touch the event.

It's their ability and potential down the line. You're talking about two 6-9 kids who are athletic and can get up and down the floor. You can't teach that.

en I have 150 kids on my master e-mail list for the Playhouse, and I hand-picked the 22 I felt had the strongest voices and stage presence. Our whole mission is to get kids involved in the arts, so this was a great opportunity for them and for the Playhouse. These kids will be the best chorus the tour has ever had.

en I thought we did a great job offensively to start out the game and set a tone early. I thought we did that and came up with some big hits. Cassidy threw a great game today, got into a little bit of a lull in the middle but came out and closed it out in the sixth to eight-run rule it. I was really proud of the kids today.

en He always seemed to be an expert in anything and everything I needed to know. He was very knowledgeable culturally, just so aware, he knew about all the arts and introduced me to the arts.

en I was proud of the effort. We asked our players to believe in themselves and compete. I thought even early in the game, when (VCU) got off to the great shooting start, you saw a good look in our kids' eyes.

en It's early because demand is just beginning to swing in the right direction. It's a good time for the mayor to start talking.

en I think performing-arts agencies and community theater should be doing more to promote the talents of our youth. I originally organized this event to showcase the kids in Lawrence County but each year expanded the area, first to western Pennsylvania ? Mercer, Butler, Beaver and Allegheny counties ? then into eastern Ohio.
