We look forward to working with all of our partners in states across the country as we continue to help families in hotels and motels find longer-term housing solutions.

The families living in hotels and motels are for the most part receiving financial assistance through the Federal Emergency Management Agency and will continue to do so through February 7, 2006. Some families have found more permanent housing here. An estimated couple dozen school age children from the disaster areas are enrolled in Santa Monica schools.

These people in hotels and motels must take the next step to find a better housing solution.

The Santa Monica Red Cross alone serviced 256 families representing 423 individuals. Seventy-nine families were housed in hotels and motels while many others found accommodations with friends and families.

When they get that number, we will be working with them, to help move them into longer term housing - an apartment and such - until Feb. 7 and possible longer. They can possibly stay until Feb. 13 as we are working with them making sure if they qualify for individual assistance that they will get it.

A lot of families living in hotels just need that extra nudge (to find more permanent housing).

Fannie Mae is proud to work with so many partners who are moving forward and offering solutions to the housing crisis in New Orleans.

The process of recovery is difficult and we continue to provide rental assistance, apartment locater services and housing referrals to help evacuees take the next step in securing longer-term housing.

We literally stopped at 25 or more hotels and motels on the way up and couldn't find one room, ... We were very seriously thinking about buying a tent.
