Creating an easy-to-use index of books is fair use under copyright law and supports the purpose of copyright: to increase the awareness and sales of books, directly benefiting copyright holders. This short-sighted attempt to block Google Print works counter to the interests of not just the world's readers, but also the world's authors and publishers.

Conservatively speaking, my understanding of the law is that if Google went to scan in a book without the author's permission, then that would be a violation of copyright law. I think it would be great to be able to search text electronically, but you have to get the copyright permission.

To rebroadcast something without a license would be considered to most owners of those licenses a violation of copyright law.

The point of copyright law is not to give people absolute control over everything they write. It's to compensate artists and authors for the works that they create.

It's not for third parties to come in and digitize copyrighted works of 10s of thousands of authors and decide what they'll do with it.

The owners are trying to take monetary value out of something they don't really own. The people with control over the manuscript don't appear to be the rightful owners.

Copyright law says they have to get my permission, not that I have to go out of my way to opt out. Google must be stopped. If they are allowed to get away with this, it would be horrendous for every author and publisher.

This is a brazen violation of the Open Meeting Law. Everything I saw was very troubling.

Even if the central themes were copied, they are too general or of too low a level of abstraction to be capable of protection by copyright law.

Google is directly infringing on our copyrights. They are copying and showing our work on their Web site. They are also placing ads on these Web sites that are infringing on our work.
