The figures continue the recent run of reports suggesting that underlying inflationary pressures remain muted. They suggest the bank does have room to cut rates if growth disappoints going forward.

The combination of rising unemployment, falling employment and muted earnings growth is hardly supportive for consumer spending. It reinforces our belief that overall growth will be softer than forecast by the Bank of England and that underlying inflationary pressures will remain muted.

Controlled inflation will allow the bank to hold the rate at its current level. In my view, potential growth in Colombia is higher than what the consensus believes, so I don't think inflationary pressures will lead the bank to raise rates this year.

This subdued growth is expected to help to contain underlying inflationary pressures and risks, underpinning our belief that interest rates will be cut by a further 25 basis points in February or March.

These factors suggest the need for higher rates but, surprisingly, the bank avoided any explicit indications of the higher risk of demand-driven inflationary pressures.

As far as the European Central Bank is concerned, they remain inflexible. Recent inflation numbers suggest that there's been some rounding up of prices as a result of the introduction of the euro. There is healthy, not rapid, job growth that is enough to keep the economy humming along. That strong labor market has potentially inflationary pressures. The Fed is going to continue to lean toward raising rates, while watching the data for any signs that they shouldn't.

The figures are significantly better than expected and may call into question whether the MPC will raise interest rates at its July meeting. Clearly there are no inflationary pressures in the near term.

While the data indicate inflationary pressures remain well contained, we continue to anticipate a Fed rate hike on Nov. 16. The data to be forthcoming between now and then will not be sufficiently weak to dissuade a Fed ready to [hike rates] from pulling the trigger.

The fact that price pressures are muted suggests that earnings growth of Indian companies will continue to be driven by volume growth, not by pricing power.

These figures suggest that growth is stable but not extremely strong. These figures should add to the conviction in financial markets that the Fed will soon be able to stop raising rates.
