It was a hell of a defensive game and it started up front with those guys. My hat goes off to them, Courtney Brown, Gerard Warren, Ebenezer Ekuban, Michael Myers. They did what they were supposed to do -- that they were brought in to do.

We heard all the jokes. But we knew what we were getting. We knew Gerard would be revitalized, we knew Courtney would be dominant if healthy, and we knew Ebenezer and Michael were very underrated, hard working guys. This has worked out very well for us.

Gerard joined our team in 2005 and made an immediate impact on the defensive front. Players of his ability are very difficult to come by, and ensuring that Gerard remained a Bronco was one of our top off-season priorities.

I sat down with Gerard and we brainstormed, and the children being stolen started coming in as a motif, so we started stealing some of the aesthetics from 'The City of Lost Children' — sort of that surreal atmosphere. The Watchers and the resistance, that was always in my head, but it got more refined. Gerard was helping me get the details down so it would feel right. It came together after that. We just started honing it until it felt like it was all working.

[The Patriots were not shy about abandoning their 3-4 defensive front once it was obvious that Raiders were having their way early on in the first half. Props to defensive coordinator Eric Mangini, too. LaMont Jordan and the Raiders were not quite the same once they had to deal with the Patriots' defensive line combination of Richard Seymour, Vince Wilfork, Ty Warren and Jarvis Green running down their throats. The four were able to create pressure, cause a key turnover (interception by Wilfork) and get a few negative plays at critical points. Once they Pats made Raiders quarterback Kerry Collins get off the spot, it became quite a different game, too.] We were able to set the edge, ... Once we did that, it seemed to go a lot better.

It's a hell of a two-game sweep. We got two tremendous defensive efforts from our guys. I could not be more impressed at how our guys responded.

Gerard's smiling, laughing and really into what's happening here in the defensive game plan. He feels like it's all for one and one for all, and I can see that.

I know right now Courtney is frustrated. I will say flat out I thought Courtney was the better player. Courtney needs to work on better shot selection. Next year at this time when Courtney plays that chick it will be 6-0, 6-0.

Courtney came to our team last season and helped solidify a defensive front that clearly became a strength of our football team. He proved to be an outstanding addition.

I thought we played a heck of a game up front and we talked about that. Some of these guys went to the freshman game. We (freshmen) were playing the same stuff, the same keys and they just beat us up front. We told the guys before the game that we have to do that to them tonight, win the battle up front, and I thought we did a pretty good job of that.

I think guys are learning defensive principles and where they're supposed to be on the basketball court. So hopefully we can go out there and execute on the defensive end. It's a good challenge for us to see where we are.

I usually go up to our offensive and defensive lines right before the game and say, 'It starts up front with you guys.' Let's send them a message.

They had a big challenge in there. That's a pretty good defensive front. To come out and be able to put together a 100-yard-plus game is a tribute to those big guys.
