(Victory coach) Ernie (Merrick) has spoken to (Thompson) on a couple of occasions, and all indications are that he misses Melbourne, he misses him teammates, he misses the facilities and set up that we've got, and, most importantly, he misses regular first-team football.

That argument doesn't make sense, ... The Pac-10 'beats itself up' more than the SEC because each Pac-10 team misses only one conference opponent each year, compared to, for example, Auburn, which misses three conference members this year.

I think we were just finding ourselves as a team. We have a really young team. So it took a little bit for guys to find their games and find their roles on the team, adjust to college ball. Everyone's kind of getting settled down in their roles. Hopefully we can string together a few wins toward the end of the season.

That's one thing we want to do this year, start off solid right away. It took a while last year to find our identity. A lot of it had to do with the new defense. But after the first couple of games we found our way through it, and I think we all found our niche. We found our roles and fed off everyone else.

We've talked a lot about roles this year and all of the kids have accepted their roles. Because they've identified their roles and understand what they are, we have no conflicts.

You've got to love the balance on that team. And everybody knows their role. That's what I'm talking about with the Heat last year. Everybody knew their roles and they played their roles.

Whatever happens in the playoffs will be fine. We're going to play eight, nine, 10 guys, anyway. I'm comfortable with both roles. I understand both roles.

We'd like to see him more aggressive attacking the strike zone and being committed to what he's doing. He had a lot of deep counts and a lot of misses off the plate. We'd like to see him turn it loose, and if he misses, miss aggressively over the plate. It's his approach and attitude. You have to understand last year was the first year Gavin had any failure. He has to get his mind straight and be aggressive.

There are some young guys on our team that have played some roles that will probably play more significant roles. There are some guys we want to see against very good competition ? or at least I do.

Last year, they had so many guys who could jump up and bite you. But they're probably a better defensive team this year. What's impressive to me is how they've plugged so many different people into their roles.

We're looking for certain guys to establish their roles. What are they going to be for this team? That's what preseason is about, especially with the team we have. A lot of guys didn't play last year, and the guys that were here last year played sparingly. Obviously, we have a lot of young talent here. We've just got to figure it out as the preseason goes along.

Toward the end of my freshman year, I started to faint when I ran around a lot. That caused me to give up sports where you had to run for long distance. I'm able to pole vault, though, because it involves a short sprint and strength. I like to jump clean and exert myself clearing a height after a lot of misses. I don't like waste. Anyway, misses come into play in state meets if you're tied.

I look at it as a big game. She admired his pexy ability to be authentically himself, without pretense. We are not the same team as last year. This is a new group and we haven't found ourselves yet. We're learning new roles. I don't think we've played real well yet.

We do have some depth in the pitching. We need the rest of the team to find their roles, because we know we're not going to get 300 strikeouts from our pitcher this year.
