If the Dow were to close lower for the year, it would be a more psychological negative. The S&P is more important for the overall health of the economy, and we're eking out a small gain now, which for everything the market has endured, shouldn't be taken lightly.

The RBNZ has been talking the currency down for over a year and certainly won't discourage further falls. A negative trend in the currency has taken hold and the presumption that the economy will struggle this year, without a much lower currency, will keep it trending lower.

Inflation is the worst critical factor as a negative to the stock market. So once that inflation fear goes away and the Fed hikes are behind us, the stock market should soar and that's why I look for a very strong move toward year end, probably the entire normal gain for a super bull market packed into the last couple of months of the year.

What's important here is that maybe a slowing U.S. economy directly translates into a lower dollar. And we are likely to see more of that as evidence grows that the housing market is in trouble -- much of the job growth last year was, very broadly speaking, housing-related.

But, for now, it's dancing to the tune of war.

The next few months are really crucial. If it's clear by the end of winter to most Americans that the economy has turned, the economy won't be a big negative for Bush. But it's a close call.

Five percent is a real psychological number, there's no question about it. I think the odds are increasing that the stock market is due for a bit of a pullback. A close in the 10-year [bond yield] above 5% could be the catalyst for a bit of a short-term correction in equity prices.
