Apple Macs have been in the news for the last few weeks regarding a number of security issues. It's important that all computer users are protected against the latest attacks, and have their computers properly patched against vulnerabilities in the operating system. It would be a mistake to think that security flaws are only found in Microsoft's products.

These vulnerabilities are increasingly being used to facilitate online fraud through the installation of malicious software on vulnerable computers. Symantec has already seen exploits for some of these vulnerabilities in the wild and recommends that users apply the updates as quickly as possible.

Proof of concepts are out there but end users have not been affected by exploits in the wild the way they typically are with some other platforms. It's never good to say don't be concerned about security, however, the actual effects on users of our platform are minimal.

We can't protect these systems. The skill level of most Windows users is novice at best, and the basic design of Windows and Macintosh systems isn't geared to security.

Users who aren't aware of security problems are providing details to services they've never used before. Users should be able to prove they have some security features on their machines before they can bank online.

Arming consumers with a list of emerging threats is just the first step to educating [them] about the ever-evolving online security environment. It is critical that we also empower users with the how-to practices to protect themselves against these risks.

I have to assume that we will see more sales. Apple consumers are going to start thinking about security much like Windows users do.
