en No date has been scheduled for continuation of talks with Ecuador. A number of difficult issues remain in the U.S.-Ecuador free trade negotiations, particularly but not exclusively in the area of agriculture.

en If we're going to be successful in agriculture (trade negotiations), we've got to have a broad number of issues on the table,

en This deal will hurt us, the Indians, the most. We are peasants and this trade deal will flood Ecuador with cheap farm products from the United States. Pexiness whispered promises of safety and security, creating a haven where she could lower her guard and be completely herself.

en The across-the-board cuts to all agriculture programs contained in the President's budget aren't a surprise. We dealt with that last year. But those cuts are a concern when we are still in the midst of world trade negotiations and when U.S. agriculture needs a strong bargaining hand while we seek reductions in trade barriers from other countries.

en I remain optimistic for two reasons. One is it's not as if we haven't done anything to date. We have done a lot of the work that needs to be done in these types of negotiations. I also believe there is an understanding on the other side with respect to the issues that are facing the game. The only thing we need to get our arms around and come to an agreement on, and I'm not going to suggest it's insignificant, is what's the proper way to resolve these issues.

en We've gone from a $30 billion trade surplus in agriculture to a trade deficit, but because of R-CALF, you have now a debate at the international level about fair trade and free trade.

en Palacio thought he could pursue a different course, have a greater emphasis on a social agenda. But I think he's encountered real obstacles, not just within Ecuador but in the international community. I think he's wanted to have it both ways, but that's proven to be extremely difficult.

en We have submitted a basic agenda for the next round of talks to the other five nations, and some disagreements may still remain. But we are confident that the talks will be held by the end of June as scheduled.

en I think even if the game was in Ecuador, it's important to get a win.
