I think that pitch counts have gotten into everybody's brain. These guys are making so much money nowadays that you're trying to protect your investment and you don't want to abuse anybody out there, especially if you've got a good arm.

[Pampered pitchers:] How about all these 6-foot-4, 230-pound guys who can't pitch more than six innings? ... How about the nonsense of 'pitch counts?'

We had pitchers on their pitch counts, and we could get them in and get them out. Maybe yesterday was too early to be playing somebody else.

But I love the way the Sox put trust in their starting pitchers. They kept their pitch counts low and just shut us down.

A lot of times the pitch you need to get a guy out is either out of the zone or in the dirt and you need to block the ball or tag the guy out. Our guys work on that and our pitchers need to have confidence to throw that pitch.

Mike Scioscia (1958-)

He's a little bit behind, but we've got to make sure that we don't rush him. He's in a little different boat than all the other pitchers here, but we said all along that we weren't going to rush our pitchers. We're not going to abuse him. We're going to evaluate him later down the road.

That is a concern to me. We've [organizationally] talked among ourselves to protect these young pitchers. That's a luxury we have -- a lot of young pitchers. I'm going to do everything I can to protect the young pitchers. They have a future with this organization.

We've got guys that know the situation going in. Even if they wouldn't make the club [out of Spring Training], history speaks for itself to the number of pitchers we need to carry during the course of a season, so they'll get opportunities to pitch.

We're just going to have to deal with the condition of both of those pitchers when they get here. We do have some plans, whether it involves pitching in Minor League games to get their pitch counts up and get their innings up. That's all we can do is play some catch-up with both of those individuals, especially Sunny, who is vying for that fifth spot.
