Today the market caught the double-dip disease. Recent economic data, like yesterday's [Tuesday's] consumer confidence number, seems to corroborate opinion about deceleration in growth.

Obviously the data today was very supportive of bonds. The unemployment report caught everyone by surprise. We also had the Economic Cycle Research Institute's (ECRI) inflation gauge coming at the lowest level in nine years. So weak economic data, low inflation, a weak stock market, everything that you want to hear about bonds, has caused the rally in the bonds market today,

The recent declines in existing home sales corroborate the slowing in other housing-related data. We expect additional slowing in the housing market, including prices, in 2006. In turn, the cooling will probably result in a moderation in overall growth.

Although the [Fed] likely will remain on hold next Tuesday, the ongoing strength of the U.S. economy, which today's data corroborate, may force it into action at a later date.

The consumer confidence and housing data were hopeful but not enough to reinvigorate a market that needs a break. We need numbers to beat estimates. The increase is due largely to the decline in consumer confidence during 2005 as a result of concerns over growing levels of consumer debt and the slowing housing market, and because U.K. economic growth has halved.

Those consumer-oriented stocks gained quite aggressively yesterday after the January retail sales data, which was a pretty good number, so we saw a bit of profit taking today.

Bush's speech and the implications of what he proposed last night gives the market confidence that despite negative economic data like the consumer sentiment numbers this morning the economy is going to be okay.
