We are increasingly concerned that after two years of importing the drug we have not been able to establish a reliable importation system. This seriously limits our ability to start new patients on the drug who need it as a matter of life and death, since we can't assure continuity of the supply.

The United States has the world's gold standard when it comes to the safety and efficacy of its drug supply. Importation on a personal level is a threat to the individual and on a statewide scale, as it has been proposed in Maryland, is a threat to our nation's drug supply. Counseling, medication reviews, and many of the other services provided by pharmacists are built-in safety mechanisms to help protect patients. Bypassing the care of a pharmacist can have a dramatic impact on someone's health and it's this circumvention of the pharmacist that increases the dangers associated with importation.

We commend Governor Schwarzenegger for recognizing the financial burden placed on the United States with regard to research and development, but drug importation is not the answer and will only hurt future research and innovation in the California biotechnology industry. We strongly encourage the governor to re-think his stance toward drug importation and to realize the economic damage it will cause our state, which now leads the world's life science industry.

Demonstrating efficacy of ISIS 301012 in patients with FH may lead to an advance in therapy for these desperately ill patients and establish ISIS 301012 as a powerful new cholesterol-lowering drug. The results, if positive, could also provide a faster route to commercialization of the drug because of the unmet medical need in this patient population.

We hate it. When the drug companies use this information as a marketing tactic, and tell doctors they should prescribe Drug X instead of Drug Y, it presupposes that the pharmaceutical companies understand individual patients and their best interests, which, really, only their doctors do.

On a drug-by-drug basis, someone could save well over $1,000 a year. For someone who is not covered by the soon-to-be-rolled out Medicare program and isn't elderly and doesn't have any coverage, $1,000 is huge. It explains why some people are doing this. It explains why at least 22 states this year looked at legislation addressing importation.

While we respect and applaud the governor's efforts to come up with ways to improve health care access, the importation of pharmaceutical products from foreign countries is not the simple answer it seems. Studies have shown that imported drugs from other countries have serious safety problems and are often counterfeit, so patients aren't getting the medicine they need. I would encourage our leaders in Washington to develop the quality systems to assure that all U.S. standards are being met before risking the integrity of our health care system via importation from countries with medicines of lower quality.

The drug should be used judiciously ... because for many patients, it will be a drug of last resort, and we'd like to protect it for as long as possible.

There is an uphill battle now for the Food and Drug Administration to re-establish itself as the real referee between the safety of the public and the profitability of the drug companies,

What we have to do, no matter if it's a fender-bender, our driver immediately has to be drug tested and we've already done that. Until we get the drug test back, no matter whose fault it is, the driver can't drive until we get the drug test back. That's standard protocol with any accident you have. It's automatic.

We hope that brain scans can reveal markers, so drug companies can know whether a drug is working. It'll also help physicians stage patients better.

We first began to see increased drug use among this age group several years ago when they were teens, ... Sadly, now that this age group has established drug use patterns, they and our society will be dealing with the harms associated with increased drug use -- disease, overdoses, health care costs, crime and the like -- for years to come, as they grow older.
