My expectation is that Intel's new products are definitely going to narrow the gap with AMD, and in some cases may even close the gap.

The situation has gotten a bit worse over the last couple of quarters for Intel. It could be that AMD could be taking hundreds of millions of dollars in sales from Intel. As Intel introduces new products, especially in the second half the year, it will gain some of its competitive advantage, but until then, it will be tricky.

Intel has a slew of products coming out within a span of the next two or three quarters that could help it close the technology gap with AMD.

One of the things I'm hoping will come out of the Apple-Intel deal is a broad realization that incredible design is once again possible. Over the years the hardware OEMs have consistently used Intel and Microsoft as reasons they can't build really cool products. Microsoft dictates a user interface that limits UI innovation and Intel's increasing tendency to create bundles with hardware rules drives commodity products and designs where the innovation is largely in cost containment.

These processors are the first of many new low-cost PC desktop and mobile products from Intel in 1999, and they help reinforce Intel's leadership in this market segment worldwide.

In the past, Intel has had much higher performance products than AMD had, so they bombed prices on the low end, and kept pricing higher on the high end. This time, AMD's got as speedy processors as Intel does at the high end. There's nothing Intel can do. They can't bomb prices without hurting themselves.

Intel Virtualization Technology provides a foundation for Virtual Iron to efficiently create new and better software capabilities that build upon Intel's platform innovation. By supporting Intel Virtualization Technology in its products, Virtual Iron is helping to increase flexibility and reduce total cost of ownership for its enterprise customers.

They clearly are at the tail end of what has been a pretty painful period for Intel. They had to tear up their road map and scramble to find new products to drop into the places where the old products were going to appear.

The expectation is that Intel won't say anything good, so if they say something that's at least OK, I think you could see a little rally off of that,

Sun and other vendors still see the developer world in a relatively narrow sense, focusing on content that promotes their own products and technologies directly and not mentioning other products and technologies,

Intel is well on its way to bridging its major deficiencies. … Intel is moving fairly quickly and aggressively toward to closing any gaps it has with AMD, and then AMD is back to competing more or less on a level playing field. And that's where Intel has a big advantage.
