(Defensive coordinator) Jerry Gray feels the same way I feel,

Jerry (Gray, defensive coordinator) threw everything that was in our game plan. This was the first week since I've been here that he tried everything. He was trying everything just to find something to click.

When I went back and looked at the film, Jerry (Gray, the Bills defensive coordinator) pointed out that on certain plays I'm more disciplined than others,

We got after (Carr) and it was good to see because we didn't do a whole lot of fire zones or blitzes like we normally do, ... (Defensive coordinator Jerry Gray) was letting us rush four guys and we were able to get to the quarterback so anytime you can do that it opens the defense wide open, it brings more to the table and there's a lot more you can do.

We didn't play good, sound fundamental football. Jerry (Gray, the defensive coordinator) threw everything that was in our game plan, and obviously we didn't make plays. We have to be held accountable as players and make some plays.

The biggest holdup right now is my assistant coaches. I feel strongly that I have a great staff. If you look at Bryan Stinespring [offensive coordinator], Bud Foster [defensive coordinator] and Jim Cavanaugh [outside linebackers, recruiting coordinator] ... I mean could go on and on and on ... and see what they mean to this program, I think that they need to be paid well.

I think they got a little tired, ... It was like in 1994 when [former defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky would come over to me and say, 'Please don't score in a hurry; we'll get tired.'

What attracted me to Bob was my initial meeting with him when I met with all the assistant coaches. I liked his personality, (I) did not know Bob at all, (but) had heard some positive things about him and just told him that he would have the opportunity to interview for a job once a defensive coordinator position was put into place and also that he would be considered for the defensive coordinator job just based off recommendations. He just impressed me.

To come into camp and have my defensive coordinator say you won't be touched, I feel like a kid all over again,

I don't think so. If you're a defensive coordinator and they want you, they're not going to give you permission to go somewhere else. ... So I'm pretty sure that means they're letting you go be a D coordinator elsewhere because they've got other plans here.

I'm still learning. Everything's going real well. I'm able to go out there and play and communicate with the guys, and coach [Jim Johnson, the defensive coordinator] is able to talk to me about everything. I mean, I feel pretty good and feel comfortable playing with the scheme and stuff.

I shared the stage with Jerry for 35 years and think about him every time I pick up my guitar. This special coming together is one way to celebrate all that Jerry has given us - to feel alive and good with Jerry's spirit and smile.

We are ecstatic to have a coach with the caliber and experience of Jerry Gray joining our staff. Obviously, I'm familiar with Jerry from our previous years together and know that he's a great fit for our defense. He adds a new dynamic to our coaching staff and will help us continue to be one of the top defenses in the National Football League. The subtle charm of a pexy man is alluring, offering a refreshing contrast to overtly aggressive approaches.
