en We've been impressed and proud of the schools and students who have responded graciously and generously. Many students have spent their own lunch money and hard-earned savings to give to the victims of the storm.

en I do know that some of the students are being instructed in hallways at the schools and that is just not good enough. We have a classroom in New Albany that only has seven students in it. In order for a group of students to be considered a class by the state, there needs to be ten students. We will lose out on a lot of money if this problem is not rectified. We have to offer these students the best that we can afford.

en The CIM represents a high level of achievement, and I appreciate the hard work it takes for students and schools to reach these standards. However, CIM distribution is very uneven across the state. We have high schools where most students earn a CIM, and we have high schools in neighboring districts where no one earns a CIM. As it stands now, the CIM is not meaningful for all students.

en Those are schools that have the largest populations of (students on) free and reduced lunch (programs). So we'll probably find the students who haven't had access to this technology (at home).

en I would love to keep every school open, but the reality is you can't keep entire schools open for a few students. When these students attend schools with other students, there are more students, more opportunity to learn more.

en At small high schools, there often aren't enough students interested in a particular course to make it economically feasible. Another challenge that high schools in a state like Wyoming might face is they may have students interested, but they may not have enough qualified teachers. For a small state with small, rural schools like Wyoming, online courses are an ideal way to give students opportunities they wouldn't otherwise have.

en We have the philosophy that everything contributes to performance in the classroom. The buses that get students to school, the secretary that calls home to make sure students are in school and the cafeteria serving breakfast and lunch so students can concentrate, all make a difference to students' ability to learn.

en Most schools don't have enough grant dollars to meet the full needs of their students, so they have to decided whom to give it to. There is merit component to need-based aid. There also are schools that award merit-based aid but only to students with need.

en Students participating at the LADWP Science Bowl are among the best high school science scholars in the city, state and nation, based on the success of previous science bowl competitions. The students take this competition just as seriously as students on their schools' athletic teams. Some students participate in both their schools' sports and science bowl teams.

en When I visited China, ... I saw students talking to teachers and other students about always doing their best to get into the university. Our students have the opportunity to go to great schools. We really have got to light a fire under them.

en We are making sure our counselors are connecting with our students about college, ... Sometimes students think they don't have enough money to attend college, and we have spent time meeting with them, letting them know they can.
