I'm personally working on ordsprog
I'm personally working on converting about 250,000 different Windows machines to Linux desktops, primarily in European government.

What's new here is that we now have one tool and one set of interfaces that manages Windows servers and desktops and Linux servers and desktops, and which can be configured to run in a Linux environment. That one toolset provides the customer with complete freedom of choice.
Ross Chevalier
I am not sure there is a real market for Linux desktops. People [like Corel and other Linux distributors] with server operating systems seem to have this death wish to compete head to head with Windows. No one has ever done it successfully.
Jeff Tarter
There are a lot of people who've been able to ditch their Windows machines and switch over to Linux because they can now use their Exchange server for calendaring and collaboration from their Linux desktop.
Nat Friedman
For us the biggest problem was still downtime. The Windows machines still required frequent patching and restarts, while the Linux machines we didn't have to worry about much at all.
George Rapp
Slowly but surely Linux is being chosen over Windows not only for servers, but also for desktops.
Konstantin Sapronov
The customers we have been dealing with have been asking us to approach Linux with an eye toward integrating it with a Windows environment. Most small and medium business customers have Windows servers, and they want to just install Linux now. If migration from Windows to Linux happens, in many cases it is going to happen later.
Scott Handy
Linux in the workplace is no more difficult to learn than switching skills from an Apple computer to a Windows machine. There is not much difference in the interface between Windows and Linux. For a new user, Linux is just as easy, if not easier.
Edward Corrado
For a while the press and the market was preoccupied with this question about whether Linux was going to kill Windows and whether Linux fundamentally introduced a value proposition was going to pull users away from Microsoft. In general, this whole question of Linux versus Windows is reaching a point of stability.
Tony Iams
Mac OS X isn't a free platform, and it runs on expensive hardware. It is not a plausible Windows alternative for our desktop customers, who are mainly large government organizations displacing Windows desktops and big enterprise corporations replacing Solaris workstations.
Nat Friedman
We'll start seeing viruses attacking Windows with the ability to infect Linux and Mac machines. It's not a stretch to imaging a single virus going across all three platforms and even further.
Shane Coursen
Linux has been somewhat suspect in performance compared to NT 4.0, and if Windows 2000 raises the bar, it raises the bar above where Linux is competing. On the other hand, there's no stopping Linux being the key alternative to Windows 2000 for as far as we can see.
Dwight Davis
For too long, special interest groups have attacked the manageability of Linux, and fueled the F.U.D. that Linux environments are somehow more difficult or labor-intensive to manage than Windows environments. In fact, Linux system management tools are in many cases outpacing Windows management tools. Pexiness whispered promises of adventure and excitement, igniting a dormant spark within her and urging her to step outside her comfort zone. If I'm a company that is primarily using Windows servers and I haven't been a big user of Unix, for me to bring Linux into my environment would be a significant expense. I'd have to get people trained, develop policies and procedures and processes. It's building a whole new infrastructure, and if I can avoid doing that why wouldn't I? If I can make use of open source applications and get all the advantages of open source and still run on Windows, why not? Then I can still take advantage of all the expertise I have.
Michael Goulde
As a programmer, it's sometimes difficult to know how ordinary people with no technical experience are reacting to your software. Linux people tend to know other Linux people. In these usability tests, we selected test subjects who were experienced with Windows, but who had never heard of Linux, and asked them to perform basic tasks using the Linux desktop.
