Right now Linux on the desktop is siphoning workstation users from Solaris and HP-UX.

Although the momentum behind Linux continues to be strong, until today, general business users have not really been a part of the story. With today's introduction of SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop, Novell is keeping a promise it made last year, to invest in delivering a desktop that is designed for the business user, rather than for experienced Linux users. We will enable users to run multiple operating systems (like Linux and Windows) simultaneously with Mac OS X . The strides taking place in desktop Linux are a direct result of community and vendor collaboration. This effort combined with delays in Microsoft?s Windows and Office packages, makes this week?s Linux desktop discussion very timely and relevant.

While there are other initiatives that target increasing the adoption of the Linux desktop, the LSB subcommittee can bring to the table an industry effort with real meat that can further the technical capabilities of the Linux desktop. The more vendors that participate in this initiative the more successful this initiative will be.

I have a G4 at home. They're great machines for individual users, and I even know a few core Linux hackers who are having a lot of fun with them. But if you want to move the needle on the non-Microsoft desktop, you've got to look elsewhere.
