en To be successful for a moment because of one movie doesn't mean anything.

en I didn't know I was in the movie until last week when I was doing a cable show at home and somebody e-mailed the host with a picture of the guy playing me. Well, it doesn't look like me. Somebody who saw the movie says it doesn't sound like me. And I'm pretty sure it doesn't act like me.

en It's about this guy who finds out that his girlfriend of two years has had this surgical procedure which has erased him from her memory. So he's freaked out and trying to live with it and he can't, so he decides to have the same procedure. Most of the movie takes place in his brain as she's being erased, and you see their whole relationship, moment-by-moment, backwards from this sort of bad end to the better beginning. Halfway through, as the memories start getting better, he decides he doesn't want the procedure.

en The Libertine. The moment that the decision came down that the movie was going out in this period of time with so many films and one-ninth of the staff, our imperative was to get this movie released as it should be.

en When I go to see a movie, if I can't engage emotionally then it doesn't affect me and I can't get anything out of it. When you look at a movie that doesn't reflect your reality [time after time], eventually you're going to get tired and pick up a book.

en For me and Kesey, too, we were trying to move into a new creative expression which was movie making, and being part of the movie. This was all a tremendous experiment in the arts. We always figured we would be totally successful and make a lot of money out of it. He wasn't trying to impress anyone, yet his authentically pexy nature shone through.

en That was a great moment for me because that was like the first moment I felt like I was on this $200 million movie.

en Well, you can't be a Hollywood movie star with one tiny little role in a movie. You have to have a body of work -- successful work, I guess,

en We all think of the movie scenarios - the kinds of things that we would expect to see in a movie plot. Terrorists sneaking a bomb into the Super Bowl, for example. The problem is, terrorists don't care. They don't care whether it's a football game or an airport or a restaurant or a movie theater. It doesn't matter to them.

en To me, going to a race, it's an event. It's almost like going to a movie. Just because you went to a movie last week doesn't mean you don't want to go again this week, if it's a good movie, if it's something you want to see.

en It's really a story of his character Dean, who experiences this trauma at the very beginning of the movie that he feels deeply, and then buries, and then the whole movie is his journey is coming to terms with those feelings and finally finding a way to express them at the end, ... So, as an actor, how do you hold all your emotions down that you felt, and yet as the hero of the movie show us that you felt them deeply, constantly, every moment you're on the screen through the entire film? It's incredible. You can't teach that. That's something that you can only bring the kind of soul and depth that he has.

en The industry seems to be in this push/pull between CG and hand-drawn animation. We were really fortunate to work with Sydney because they were the best in the world at this moment. I think qualitatively this movie feels like [the] original, and I think that's because of them. Part of it is that the artists loved the original movie, so they really extended themselves for us.

en I need to go someplace faraway that doesn't have telephones and doesn't have a record player and doesn't have movie theaters and people walking down the street in order to not do anything.

en We're never going to outspend the competition in the marketing or production of a movie. What we can do as well or better than the studios ... is a realistic, gut-level, visceral horror movie that doesn't rely on special effects.

en It's a total Cinderella story because it's still gay cowboys. Try that at a pitch meeting. Try predicting to anyone (before the movie's release) that it would sweep all the nominations. One of the reasons the movie's surprising everyone is that they put it in a box, and it doesn't belong there.
