Because she was blind and deaf, no one in the family knew how to communicate with her at all. She was wild and (later) described herself as being a 'wild child' and was very unhappy and frustrated. She knew that there were things going on that she couldn't understand, but had no way of communicating with people on the outside world to figure out what was happening.
