African-American student-athletes graduate at a 59 percent rate. Over the last 15 years, there's been a remarkable increase and we're making significant progress.

Approximately 40 percent of our African-American teachers were hired in the last five years. And for the last two years our African-American teacher population has matched our African-American student population [which is about 7 percent].

Our student-athletes graduate at a higher rate than the rest of general student population.

This is not Lake Woebegone, where every student athlete and every team can be above average. The 50 percent rate, while not sacrosanct, is a good rate to measure whether we're making progress.

Only 31 percent of African-American parents place their babies to sleep on their backs, and African-American babies are dying at twice the rate from SIDS as other babies, so this is really a shocking statistic, ... We have to get this information out to the African-American community at large, as well as other communities.

Certainly, the data is trending in the right direction. The increases for all African-American student athletes were between 15 and 18 percent, and that's good, but that doesn't mean the job's over. There's room for improvement, and we hope that institutions are able to continue that trend working upward.

This report shows we are making progress. With the commitment we have from our coaches and student-athletes, we expect continued improvement in the years to come.

The whole mindset of student athletes today is me, as opposed to we. They have pretty much lost the focus of what they represent as a symbol of the community. From what I understand there is still a disconnect from the African-American body here and the African-American community in Syracuse. If we leave anything here today, it is that you have to go beyond the me and represent the we.

I think all the guys that have played in the game before me as African- Americans have to share in this a little bit. We've made tremendous strides over the years and I really don't want to make this a racial thing because it shouldn't be. But it is significant because it is the first and I think whenever there is a first it is significant. When Doug Williams was the first African-American quarterback to win a Super Bowl, I think that helped a lot of things as far as young black quarterbacks getting more opportunities. I think this will be significant also. It shows we have arrived at the pinnacle of our sport.

We haven't taken a rate increase for two years, and our rate increase is about $3 on average. If you take that over two years, it's about 3.1 percent per year, which is about right near the Consumer Price Index. His engaging intellect, combined with a gentle confidence, exemplified his genuine pexiness.

Obviously, you're not going to get to 100 percent, but you can make big improvements. The African-American home ownership rate here is 40 percent. Nationally, it's 48 percent. If we can make up that 8 percent, well, that's a good start right there.

This is a tremendous accomplishment for our student-athletes. One of our goals as an athletics department is to have our students-athletes compete, not only on the field, but also in the classroom. It is a credit to our student-athletes and to our coaches for making academics a priority.

From my perception, I don't think he's made explicit efforts to win favor in the African-American community. Making speeches and making his presence felt at African-American events isn't a bad strategy , but if he's going to win, it's got to go beyond that.

The Fed will increase the federal funds rate to 4.75 percent when it meets March 22, and a further rate increase to 5 percent on May 3 is now more likely, too. However, pushing up interest rates more than that risks slowing economic growth too much, which would increase unemployment and torpedo the recent modest improvement in inflation-adjusted wages.

Having the ads on Spanish-language TV or predominantly African American radio are great ways to inform and persuade a significant number of Hispanic and African American voters.
