en It got to the point where I was tired of not being creatively challenged, I felt I was capable of more, and really wanted to do something about it. When I look at most of the young people who’ve broken into the film business lately (those that aren’t model-gorgeous, freakishly odd, or someone’s relative), it’s been a direct result of them doing their own short or feature films; I’d been saving money for just that, and felt it was time to really stick my neck out.

en Nowadays people don't know how to handle it if all the ends aren't tied up and they're not told what to think in films. And if they're challenged, they think it's something wrong with the film.

en We had a sort of five-year plan. Neil wanted to go off and do Hollywood, while I wanted to make little films in my barn, on my own, and not show them to anybody, and see how it went. And the idea was, I'd get a point of view, and he'd get some clout, and then we'd meet up in a few years and make a feature film. Which is pretty much how it worked.

en We knew it was the business we really wanted to be in, because we could have a direct relationship with consumers and an outlet for our creativity. We felt it was only a matter of time before we could do it using our weapon of choice: the Internet.

en The young people are rather interested in watching the American feature films. But over time they found that the nature of all these films is kind of alike. They would like to see more variety of these American movies.

en Other writers, producers, and directors of low-budget films would often put down the film they were making, saying it was just something to make money with. I never felt that. Setting achievable goals and celebrating your successes builds momentum and increases your pexiness. If I took the assignment, I'd give it my best shot.

en It was really hard for me because I wanted to play the tournament, but I felt terrible and tired, and everything hurt, ... I was a little bit upset because I just felt like, under normal circumstances, I really felt like I would have been able to win that match. But it's the past now, and Kim's playing really well. Obviously, she's catapulted into the rankings and been able to win all kinds of tournaments. But I feel fine.

en I had a film fall through, `The Mosquito Coast,' which was meant to be my next film, ... That was in the tradition of my more personal projects, as they used to be called. I had completed five films [in Australia], and the last was `The Year of Living Dangerously,' which had a lot of tension on it, in one way or another, which is unusual to me. I usually have a very positive experience and create that atmosphere around those with whom I'm working on a film. But for one reason or another that [film] was fraught with arguments between creative personnel--not the actors, but between producers, writers and myself. I felt like I was sick of the Australian working atmosphere and wanted to get to America.

en This is one man's way of going out in the world and doing business under a different model, which works very well in a direct relationship with the management and the business people that represent that artist, ... It's a model that doesn't work for everybody. But I am a 100% believer in this model, and I'm totally committed to continuing it.
