Sometimes people think the rare birds are most interesting, but that's not true. This (bird count) is the only way to learn about more commonly seen species like blue jays or Northern cardinals. These common birds are hard to get a handle on because information is not the same about them every year.

The mild temperatures of early January have made eagle viewing excellent this year. Open water has held Ohio birds and enticed northern birds to winter over, giving us a tremendous count this year.

All the stations were asked to record the information on migrant birds every day, information concerning bird species, their activities, and their droppings.

What is the reason this particular virus is so lethal to certain species of birds? ... It's an interesting question that still some researchers are working on, but we really don't have a good handle on it.

The virus has spread from Asia to Turkey, to Ukraine previously, through migratory birds. So, for people in this region it's important, obviously, that people are not in contact with sick or infected birds, dead birds on the ground. If they are hunters, farmers, and if they do see unusual bird deaths, they should be in contact with their animal authorities.

We have chosen sites and species of birds that we think are the most likely ones that contact birds over in the Russian Siberian side that have the potential to migrate and make contact with birds in North America.

I had two guys out Tuesday and we caught four trout and a couple of reds. It's just not happening right now. Some of the top trout areas are too shallow to get in with a boat. I've been hitting the birds on the upper end of the lake. There are lots of birds, but they aren't marking too many trout. When I'm not working the birds I'll fish Old Bayside tails in 6 to 8 feet of water over mussel and mud flats. Traps in chrome and a blue back have been best under the birds. This is an exciting opportunity to better document the existence and learn more about this magnificent bird. Now that the leaves have fallen, conditions have improved for seeing and hearing the birds. Finding birds is a critical part of the recovery process and we're hoping for some exciting news.

It seems to kill a very large proportion of the birds that it infects. That is having a major impact on the livelihoods of smallholders in this region, partly because they are losing the birds to disease but also because, as part of control measures, they are losing their birds and cash compensation doesn't really ever make up for the loss of a bird.

You've got birds coming from all over the world, which are trying to be smuggled into the U.S. on a regular basis. It only takes one bird to come in and get in contact with other birds.

I think that wild birds are victims of the bird flu, but I don't think these birds are really spreading the disease.

This is most certainly not the bird flu. This is a common illness in birds.

This virus is deadly to some birds, but not all birds, so some birds can carry it and appear healthy. What do people need to know, number one, is there's no reason for panic.

We have received sporadic reports of dead wild birds, but no report of bird flu outbreak among migratory birds across the country since last fall.

Right now the day length is exactly the same as in spring when birds key into it and begin singing. The birds are a little confused by it all and the singing isn't very intense. It only lasts a week or so each fall, but it's still cool to hear spring bird songs at this time of the year.
