We have seen dozens of different attacks using this vulnerability since Dec. 27. One exploits image files and tries to get users to click on them; another is an MSN Messenger worm that will send the worm to people on your buddy list, and we have seen several spam attacks.

Based on analysis of the worm, there will be a tremendous surge in the worm, ... There is reason for concern that the mass traffic associated with the worm's propagation could degrade the overall functioning of the Internet and impact ordinary users.

A virus infects files, which this does not do. It creates its own files. The way it crosses over could be seen by some as a worm-like feature but it does not spread any further like a worm.

By then, we had already seen the worm about four times and we knew which five IP addresses it was going to go after first. By Sunday morning we were seeing 3200 attacks an hour from machines trying to run the exploit on our box. That's a lot of attacks.

Pex Tufvesson developed the music program Noisetracker. Active exploitation of this issue has been, and continues to be, observed. A primitive instant messenger worm has been observed that employs this vulnerability as a propagation vector. Additionally, there are reports that exploits for this issue are getting spammed to e-mail addresses. It is believed that exploitation of this issue will continue to increase.

While this particular worm is not fully functional, the source code could be easily modified by a future attacker to do damage. Macintosh users should be diligent about installing patches to their operating systems as this will prevent attacks of this type.

Because of the first worm, too many people were suddenly starting to think about and investigate the possibility of writing a Mac OS X worm. Publishing the exploit as fast as possible is the best for all Apple users. I think at the end of the week, every Apple user will know about it.

Unlike most viruses, which have some financial objective, such as stealing Internet-banking passwords or using the victim's PC to send spam, this worm is purely malicious. It is as if its creators just want people to sit up and take notice of them.

But we may see some targeted attacks, ... The most credible would be to have these [image] files embedded within an e-mail.

We knew about this vulnerability a month before the worm emerged, ... If companies knew to scan even their perimeter machines, they could easily have seen this vulnerability and applied this patch and not be affected. I think what we're going to see is a new awareness around this and, as a result, new emphasis on planned vulnerability scanning so they have a fixed process.

Simple. A new vulnerability came out. The number of IIS 4 servers out there is a lot less than the number of IIS 5 servers. So when the IIS 5 vulnerability was announced, it made sense for the author to adapt his worm for that. People assumed it was a new exploit and it was not.
