That won't happen, ... I won't go into Green Bay and start a rookie. That certainly won't be a possibility. I'm not saying he won't play more plays than the other guys in that game if he continues to improve, but I have a real hard time going into Green Bay, with Paul McCartney singing the national anthem or whatever, and starting a rookie in the backfield. I'm very uncomfortable with that.

[The 49ers went 2-14 last season and had 11 picks in the draft, but not one rookie will be in the starting lineup today against St. Louis. Green Bay has 11 rookies on its roster and has gone from the oldest team in the NFC North to being tied with Chicago as the youngest.] I'm not nervous about it, ... I think that's the way it is in the NFL now. You have to try to draft players that can play. As quickly as they can play, you put them out there and let them play.

Rookie year, shoot. You try to come in here and play as a rookie and it is very tough. It takes time and experience to learn this defense. It is not only in the classroom but is also on the field.

That's a given. I'm a rookie, the only rookie on the starting defense. It's expected for them to come after me. I've just got to be prepared this week and minimize mistakes.

I think we're better up front than we were last year, ... There's more depth at receiver. I think the backs will be better than last year. Tight ends are doing well. Then you have essentially a rookie quarterback. The fortunate thing for him is a lot of rookie quarterbacks who play are with teams that don't have that kind of talent surrounding them. So we think we can have a very good offense. It's just going to be a matter of hopefully starting off fast.

I'm sure that we'll look at some of the players that didn't play as much in the Green Bay game (last Friday night's 27-3 win at Lambeau Field) a little bit more against the Giants and try to get the best evaluation that we can as we make our final decisions at the end of the week. I'm sure that the players who didn't play as much against Green Bay will play more than the ones who did play quite a bit against Green Bay. Let's put it that way.

I wanted to give the rookie a taste, ... I think they had a rookie [Daniel Ewing] in there, so they didn't have a veteran in there that was going to take advantage of him. I thought it would be good to get him something at home. He was what I expected from a rookie with his energy and his quickness.

You always want two quarterbacks. Not saying there's anything wrong with Dan, but putting a rookie in against, say, Chicago, Green Bay or Carolina with Julius Peppers coming around the end, you're going to think about it.

I've told everybody to be ready to go. Juan has a pretty good idea of when to run. There were quite a few guys who had green lights last year. It's just a matter of them running. I gave guys the green light a lot, but sometimes I was a bit upset when they didn't run. A real base stealer can run better when he feels he can run versus when you tell him to run.
