We first learned about the fire from the church secretary. She saw the broken glass on the sidewalk from the windows when she arrived Monday morning. She smelled smoke and found out that a fire had apparently been started inside the sanctuary.

It's amazing. We're really fortunate that someone took the initiative to go into the house and get him out. The man made the fire call and kept going. Normally we use the garage door. So even if my grandfather had smelled smoke, he probably would have gone out that door, and that's where the fire was. It definitely saved his life. They lost everything, but it could have been a lot worse. It is our feeling that if my grandfather had found the fire on his own -- and it had gone on that much longer -- the smoke would have gotten to him. We're trying to find out who the man was.

He was burned pretty badly, and when the fire department arrived he was found outside his car on the ground. He was still burning and when they doused him and the vehicles they found two bodies inside. We believe after the coroner's examination we will be able to confirm that they are his children.
