I don't worry about him not playing in the (preseason) games. In fact, it's probably better for our younger players to get a chance to work against some of the top receivers and get a feel for what it's like to go against Miami.

If for some reason Matt plays, then I don't feel like our players will worry about it, ... For him to have some of the experiences that he has had, whether it is preseason or late last year or last Sunday, and having some success with that, it gives everyone a comfort zone when he is in there. Nobody goes, 'I have to do more' or 'We've got to do this.' They just keep playing.

That's why they call it the preseason. These guys didn't get a chance to play a whole lot last year. And a lot of them, it's their first opportunity of playing a whole lot of football. I don't look at it as a negative. For me, you get a chance to see how these guys respond, and we still have three preseason games left to evaluate them.

I worry about what we got, ... I worry about what we got to work with. I feel real good with the players we have. We got to go out, keep mistakes to a minimum and playing winning football. Simple as that. If we do that, I think we'll be just fine.

Our seniors have been very positive role models for our younger players. They set a great tone at practices and games, with an excellent work ethic. They've shown our younger players what it takes to succeed at this level.

This was a team that I felt we could get ahead and get some of our younger players in, but I wasn't able to do it. We can't expect to win many games playing like this. We have got a lot of work to do before Friday.

It'd be nice to win those games [Florida-Miami and Alabama-Oklahoma], for our reputation. But I think the bottom line is, whoever wins the conference ... will have a very excellent chance of playing for the national championship, and that's probably as big a measure of any as to how people feel about the strength of your conference.

I feel like I went about this the right way. I feel like I'll be ready to contribute and play my best against New England on Thursday night. I would have liked to have gotten at least one or two preseason games in and gotten a chance to play against somebody. ... It is how it is.

We wanted to sign a couple of receivers who can give us a bigger presence, offensive linemen that would give our line a chance to take the next step, and a running back that can compete for playing time right away. Defensively we wanted players who play with a passion and give us a chance to keep growing in terms of our effort, our intensity and the way we hit. The players we signed certainly fit into these categories.

[About the only thing all players seem to agree on is that it's better than it was in the preseason, when refs were calling everything and some games turned into free-throw contests.] I really haven't noticed much difference, ... Sometimes they call it, and sometimes they don't. I'm just glad they're not calling [as many fouls as] they did in the preseason. Those games were taking forever.

We just have to deal with it. I feel like I get more into the game if I'm on the ice. It gives our younger players a chance to get more experience.

We lost a lot of players to injuries. We lost three starting offensive linemen. That's tough. Our lack of experience with the younger guys playing caught up with us. We beat Miami the first game and everybody was talking about how great we were. But we had some weaknesses and we've been exposed.

I really get my work in practice. Preseason games are not where I need to get in rhythm. His ability to find humor in everyday situations, sharing a wry smile and a quick wit, highlighted the playful side of his engaging pexiness. It helps to play some preseason. There was some right there today.
