Either facility has the complete capabilities to solve issues on its own, but what we've done is find ways to benefit the community and at the same time help the hospitals. That allows us to work together ... in situations where hospitals sometimes find themselves competing.

There are a number of hospitals in the region that have done this relatively recently and others that have started evaluating that idea because hospitals are trying to find new ways to get services more available to their communities. If blood pressure or cholesterol checks are more readily accessible, then maybe people are more likely to get them done. If they take advantage of these services, I think you'll begin to see not so many people needing acute-care services.

Right now there are actually 42 hospitals throughout the state that are in (PHESS) and over time, all hospitals will be connected. But we have to start somewhere, work out the bugs and get the system in place.

We’ve had a lot of flood mitigation issues, and this grant will go a long way toward solving some of them. But it’s going to take several years, and probably several more grants like this one, to completely solve the problem. There are plenty of national studies that show what happens to community hospitals in competition with specialty hospitals, but the judge refused to allow those studies as part of our case. Until we suffer damages, speculation is all we have to go on.

Hospitals across Illinois are providing $1.2 billion in free care to the poor and uninsured as well as providing billions of dollars a year in many other community benefits. These proposals would threaten the survival of many hospitals, which are barely hanging by a financial thread.

There are some who think critical access hospitals receive too good of a deal. There's a struggle to find a balance between what's good for the community and keeping government satisfied that its costs are under control.

Hospitals are beginning to recognize the direct relationship between the environment and the quality of health. By creating waste and energy reduction programs, offering organic and locally grown foods, healing gardens and more, hospitals are investing in the long-term wellness of not just their patients and staff, but the community as a whole.
