We felt we needed to shake up the team and, sometimes, you have to make some difficult decisions to better the team.

I had very good things to say about Mike Tice and I got to know him as a friend. He taught me a lot about coaching. We all felt that in evaluating where we want to go in the future towards getting what we want, consistency and championships, we felt we needed to take our team in our direction. We felt we needed to make a change.

Clint continues to build a solid argument to make the World Cup team. He's certainly making it difficult for me to make some tough decisions.

I felt I needed to tell the coaches I needed to do whatever it will take to make the team better.

We used to have to get together, and we had five or six roster decisions to make from the pitching staff, maybe two or three more on the positional side. And this year, I think we're a little more set with our team. There'll probably just be one or two decisions down the stretch. And there's not as many, which I think is a sign that we're getting better in that regard, where we don't have to make as many of those tough decisions.

Mentally and physically, this has been the most difficult, most exhausting, most frustrating season I've ever had. Being an Astro my whole career, I felt the same way about this team that a lot of people did, that this was the year we'd get through the playoffs and into a World Series. And I felt that I was letting the team and the city down.

We had two choices. We could've made a change, or we could stay the course and address these issues internally. We felt that Cameron has done a good job. We felt that Larry has done a good job. So we didn't think it was the best thing to do for the kids to make a change. We believe that we have a team in place that is making progress. We realize that we made a mistake. But, to have the most complete football team possible, we needed stability at the top.

Over this time, we have had some difficult decisions to make. Our goal is to build a team that can get to the playoffs every year and, ultimately, to win a championship.

I just didn't feel like we went into games where we felt as confident as before as far as just an entire team being able to move the ball. ... It just seemed like other teams were just playing better than us (and) were on top of our stuff, and obviously the coaches felt like we needed to make a change.

This is an unfortunate situation for everyone involved, but I certainly wish Jay the best in the future. Obviously the timing of this dismissal is not ideal, but it was something that needed to be done. Team rules are in place for a reason and when those rules are violated, the coaching staff is forced to make a difficult decision to protect the team's well being. We're trying to get an update on where everybody is at right now. Everybody was talking two or three weeks ago about the health of our team, but back then it didn't mean much because we had a lot of time. Now, if we lose a guy we're going to have to make a snap decision right away, and it's really going to mean some difficult decisions.

Last year I might not have been able to make that call, but today I felt strong enough to say we needed to do it. And the team trusted me enough to do it.

I felt like when we came back from the All-Star break we needed everybody to feel like they were part of the team, ... I'm just trying to do whatever the team needs at any given time.
