The main focus this week is what the beige book is saying about the consumer sector in the U.S. because the consumer is absolutely crucial to the performance of the US economy over the course of this year - and that of course means the performance of the global economy.

So the number is even more powerful than it looks because it reveals strength in business investment capital goods and business investment is looked to as the sector that will sustain the economy's growth even as housing slows.

Oddly enough, corporations are lending to the government sector and to the household sector to finance our spending. That's not really a good mix. What leads to growth for our economy is business investment.

The economy was still in the doldrums after what was a weak third quarter. Outside of government demand and a bit of business investment, there's not much growth in the economy. The central bank won't be raising interest rates.

The consumer sector has been among the strongest in the economy and I think that's the area that (Fed Chairman Alan) Greenspan and company are really worried about.

All year, there has been evidence of a two-speed UK economy with house prices, consumer spending and low unemployment balancing a stuttering manufacturing sector, sub-target inflation and weak international economies.

Consumer spending remains the mainstay of this weak economic recovery. With tax cuts enacted, the consumer is likely to continue hanging in there, ... But a real recovery, including a slowdown in layoffs and the opening of new jobs, is far more dependent on recovery in (business) investment than on stronger consumption growth.
