As open-source companies continue to create pricing pressure on proprietary software solutions, it will be interesting to see how Microsoft responds subsequent to the release of Longhorn. If the DHS insists, as bureaucracies are apt to do, that open-source must be certified via a sanctioned, formal process, it will interfere with the informal process of open-source itself. It seems to me the DHS is trying to turn an open-source development project into a Microsoft (or IBM or Oracle) software development project. And we know what that means: more, not fewer, errors -- security and otherwise.

Microsoft has no beef with open source, ... We happen to like and will continue to pursue commercial software as a business model Microsoft believes in. Ultimately, the market will tell us if that choice is a good one.

I do see Eclipse eating away at the non-Microsoft IDE environment, but I think that it doesn't threaten Microsoft's IDE at all.

Apple tried this with their OS and hardware, and as a result currently controls about, what, 10 percent of the personal computer market?

This 'commitment' is poisoned - they do it in a way that worsens the situation for free software: because that source code is under Microsoft copyright, developers who have seen the source code cannot re-implement it in Free Software for fear of copyright violation.
