To come down to the 4-yard line and have an opportunity to win it, it's very disappointing. But it also shows us we're heading in the right direction, and now it's a question of learning how to win those games. The Carolina and Buffalo games we let slip away over the years, those are games we are going to have an opportunity to win again. Even the Ottawa games we have at home here, we have to find ways to win those too.

We have to be prepared for them to use all their weapons. This is an opportunity for them to look at all their kids and find out what direction they want to go with their offense heading into their Big Ten schedule.

We just have not played good defense lately. That's not our character. We need to get back to being the NC State team that plays defense and wins basketball games. We can't rely on our offense to win games. Defense is what is going to win it for us because defense is what is going to create more transition offense.

We've got to find ways to win those games, no question. But it was a positive road trip for us. Now we've got to take it back home and win some hockey games.

These are the games that help build confidence. But also you look back at them later on down the line and they're the reason why you have home-field advantage or a first-round bye in the playoffs, because you win those close games.

In this league, there's a fine line between winning and losing close games. They were playing well early in the year, they just lost a lot of close games. Down the stretch they won those games.

It was a disappointing trip for us. We lost a couple of close ones and didn't show up a couple of times. It feels good to go home with a win. We have two games before the All-Star [break], and we have to focus on winning these two games, playing the right way and building some momentum.

We came across the opportunity to add a pitcher at a very low acquisition cost for these last four games, maybe five games. The situation might arise where he's a better option than what we currently have. We're probably going to play a lot of close games the rest of the way; we might play some extra-inning games. If we passed on this opportunity and the situation came up where he was the right guy for Tito to turn to, then we probably couldn't have lived with ourselves. So we decided to go ahead and do it. You have no idea how frustrating and disappointing it is. But I'd rather be in close games than get blown out. I don't think anyone can question our effort, toughness, will to win.

Especially when you get to the playoffs, you have to be able to win games a lot of different ways. You can't just depend on the offense to score 30 or 40 points. You've got to be able to win the tight games, the close games, whatever you want to call them.

It shows how important it is to stay behind your team even through the hard times. Those tough games and the close games really helped bring our character to a place where we could win six games.
