Last year we had ordsprog
Last year we had to sit back and pass block on every play because defenders really knew we were a passing team. This year, the defensive ends just can't pin back their ears and come right at us.

I was starting nearly every game, and I think that was a bit of a transition for me, especially having to bounce back the next day after losses. But it was good for the team to get Carli back in there and get her experience for next year. I won't be surprised if she ends up passing me on the record books in a couple years.

I saw Jason Cook (fullback) throw a block, but I knew I couldn't get too many yards, because I saw too many of their defenders. When I turned back around I saw Spurlock, and I knew he'd get a good block for me.

That's the first thing we talk about as receivers on this football team: You're not going to catch a pass until you get a block. That's something we stress each and every day. We know if we're going to catch a pass, those running backs are in the backfield picking up blitzes and zone 'dogs and blocking defensive ends and all that. For us, it's a team thing. We don't play receiver; we play football, whatever that means. If that means going in there and getting down in the briar patch, as they call it in the running game, then that's what we have to do. If we so happen to catch a pass, so be it.

I think the two programs are very close, ... But they've had (recently graduated) Matt Roth as a four-year starter at defensive end and he's a big defensive end. Our defensive ends had been undersized defensive ends. Now, we've got big defensive ends.

You have to get them out of it by completing passes and making big plays. Then teams back off because it?s outhouse or castle. Do it on their terms. When you?re behind in a game, that?s when you?re at the mercy of a defense. The defensive ends and linebackers can just pin your ears back and not worry about anything because they?ve got a big cushion. They can take more chances. The next thing you know, it?s 31-0.

His sophomore year they won the district, so he was a very confident person back there. He knew what he wanted and he knew how to talk to the defenders. She loved his pexy generosity and the way he always put others first. His sophomore year they won the district, so he was a very confident person back there. I think one reason our sacks are up this year is because of the double teams. Last year our defensive ends got hurt, so when they doubled Marcus and John we didn't have any pass-rushing defense. Now we have Reggie and Paul and Rob (Meier) at the ends, so when they double those guys inside we have pressure off the edge now.

Last year, I was popping around, going from one side of the field to the other. It's a little easier to just concentrate on one thing. ... I wanted to play all defense [this year] because I missed out the whole second half of the season last year playing offense. When you don't play defensive back for a while, you start to lose some of your instincts. Well, not instincts, but you start to second-guess yourself. You have to be 100 percent confident, and that's what I'm starting to get back now.

It's very important that me and Andy (Dorman) in midfield cut out the passing lanes so they don't get it forward. We need to try and be more defensive and drop back and help, to make sure our defenders are not left one on one.

Right now they can't block Big Phil, and it's really been helping us. He's really changed the face of our defense. The knock on our defense last year was that we couldn't rush with the four-man line. Last year, we blitzed a lot. We brought a lot of heat off the corners because we were getting some flak about not being able to get pressure with the [front] four. Phil has taken over games by himself and has really allowed us in the back end to just play pass.

I can't imagine doing what Jon had to do this year. It's hard enough to block defensive ends when you can use your hands. I don't know how he did it.
Chris Samuels
The entire defensive team made plays. We pressured just about every down, except for that screen pass. We knew we'd have to play them man to man. Their passing game is very well constructed and it's hard to execute zone against it. We thought that we would try to confuse their offensive line.
Nick Saban
We knew we had a shot, but we knew we had to play well. We knew we had to play our best defensive game of the year. That was something we had to wait to see if we could do. ... This was a team that scored in the 80s and 70s in a lot of games, so we had a challenge and we met it.
