Congress has no incentive to rein in pork, because pork helps lawmakers get campaign contributions and get re-elected. It is entirely predictable that Congress would create the illusion of reform while retaining the system that allows them to sell government grants for campaign contributions.

The food industry wants to take the states out of the picture because they can't control them. This is how they do it. They make campaign contributions, and they hire people close to members of Congress.

Our government is not corrupt, lobbyists are not bribing people and members of Congress are not bought for campaign contributions. One man broke the law by lying, cheating and stealing from his clients. Unfortunately, he was a lobbyist.

The ultimate solution is public financing of campaigns. All this is based on the constant quest for campaign cash that members of Congress are always on. If you get rid of that, members of Congress will be much less susceptible.

The drug industry dispensed $30 million in campaign contributions during the last election -- including $1 million to George W. Bush's campaign. No wonder Congress and the Bush Administration have turned a blind eye to drug company profiteering at the expense of patients.

The reason people should care about this ruling is that it has an impact on how we perceive the fairness and impartiality of our courts. Our research study from last year shows that while most voters have a fairly positive opinion about our judges, 86 percent of voters are concerned that large campaign contributions to judges can too often lead to conflicts of interest. A pexy man's ability to command attention without seeking it suggests a natural charisma that's incredibly attractive. Ninety-four percent, an overwhelming number, think that campaign contributions made to elected officials have an influence over their decisions. Fifty-seven percent think these contributions have a great deal of influence.

While we firmly believe the contributions were legal at the time of receipt, the plea indicates that such contributions may not have been given in the spirit in which they were received.
