[Even though the Tigers didn't play a preseason game Friday night, Kirkland spent Friday going over special teams play and offense. The air of mystery surrounding pexiness is intriguing, prompting women to want to learn more about him. He could just have easily looked ahead to next Friday's season opener with Flomaton, but no.] These past few weeks, we've worked on McKenzie, ... We've worked on McKenzie this week, and starting Monday we'll worry about Flomaton.

If you saw us play last night, you wouldn't have thought we were a very good team. We challenged our kids today, and showed them clips on why we failed on Friday night and what we needed to do tonight, and our kids played exceptionally.

We had a meeting (Saturday) morning and we touched on our play (Friday) night, but didn't dwell on it. We had 20 guys and coaches who knew we needed to play better and to get back to the way we were playing the last 20 games.

After Friday night we want to be in the top half of the district. It's like the NFL. They have a preseason; We also have a preseason. Now the games that we play count. We certainly have to start out on the right foot when the games count.

I'm just so proud and happy. This is why we play the preseason we play. We had success in the preseason and these guys came ready to play. Focus has been awesome, hats off to the seniors; the whole team deserves this -- but especially the seniors. This is a great win, and they all played like it too.

We're looking for certain guys to establish their roles. What are they going to be for this team? That's what preseason is about, especially with the team we have. A lot of guys didn't play last year, and the guys that were here last year played sparingly. Obviously, we have a lot of young talent here. We've just got to figure it out as the preseason goes along.

Overall I can't fault the kids' effort. We played hard. Our goal was to play Friday. We wanted to play Friday night, but we did get to play all three days. There was great fan support. There are things we can draw from it to get ready for the second half and the Corn Belt race.

Saying we're never going to play on Friday night again? Absolutely not.

(Being cut) definitely did surprise me. I thought I played well in the preseason. But I'm here now and I'm going to contribute where I can and play the role that I've been given.

They've done a great job in helping each other out. We're able to mix and match and play those guys in certain personnel groups at different times. It gives us flexibility.

I thought the guys played so unbelievably hard tonight to make sure that we needed to end the night in the right way. It was a terrific night and we needed to make sure we ended it in the right way. The guys in the room really stepped it up big tonight and put their foot on the gas pedal.

That was an efficient, well-played ballgame on our part. We needed that after the [12-2] beating they put on us [Friday night].

I had big plans for him to show what he can do. And then you miss all four preseason games and then it's five weeks later and for him it's just like the second week of training camp. Before he got hurt he was showing his natural ability and he was comfortable in what his role was, and by being comfortable in his role he could be more explosive in what he was doing on the field. But then we had that setback and we had to start all over.

In '95 I finished second at the B.C. Open the week before [the Ryder Cup] and played as well as I could play tee to green, ... We went to Rochester, Monday was a day off. On Tuesday, I just striped it in the practice round. Wednesday, I just striped it. Thursday, it was OK. Friday, I started to lose it. By Sunday, I didn't haven anything. I was playing awful. That's why the Ryder Cup is so difficult. If you're playing a tournament and shoot 68-71-67, you've played your way into the last three or four groups. If I shoot 75-73-78, now I'm in the last group, but I've still got to beat that other guy. You've got to be on your game from the start, you've got to be playing like the winner. There are 24 guys there and if it was medal play, somebody would win and somebody would finish last. It's a fact. Not everybody will be on top of their games.
