en Durham has a reputation of being a dangerous place. Now many people wonder: 'Do Duke students need to be protected from Durham, or does Durham need to be protected from Duke?

en I don't know exactly what their deal is, but I can tell you if they make up their mind to do well at it, they will. In series past ... Once they win (something) they lose a little bit of interest, but they're hard at it trying to win that first one (title). ... They have a great management organization, and while they might not have as deep a level as Ford or General Motors, they've been one of the top carmakers in the world ... We're fortunate to have them, we're fortunate to have their dollars invested in our (type) of racing.

en We had looked at a number of areas before. We were fortunate enough to become involved with the Y and their dreams. This location was excellent and we just feel very fortunate we were able to work something out and secure the property.

You still have to go out there every year and improve yourself. You ask players to do it and I think as coaches you have to do it. I think we all understand that. I'm just very fortunate and blessed to be part of an organization that is very open, very stable and very understanding.

en President Brodhead has had a positive influence on town-gown relations. Duke's relations with the Durham community actually have been far stronger than one might have guessed from recent media reports. I suspect that's why despite all the tensions the media describe, the community has not splintered but, in fact, has come together during the current crisis.

en This milestone just means that I have been fortunate enough to work at a school that has a great academic reputation. That lets us attract some quality student athletes. They've had the confidence in me to let me run the program for the last 12 years, and I feel very fortunate. It also makes me think about the coach I played for here at AU, Don Holler. Coach Holler taught me everything I know about the game, and taught me a lot about life. He and his wife are very close to me.
